چکیده

For a smoothing spline or general penalized spline model, the smoothing parameter can be estimated using residual maximum likelihood (REML) methods by expressing the spline in the form of a mixed model. The possibility of bimodality in the profile log-likelihood function for the smoothing parameter of these penalized spline mixed models is demonstrated. A canonical transformation into independent observations is used to provide efficient evaluation of the log-likelihood function and gives insight into the incompatibilities between the model and data that cause bimodality. This transformation can also be used to assess the influence of different frequency components in the data on the estimated smoothing parameter. It is demonstrated that, where bimodality occurs in the log-likelihood, Bayesian penalized spline models may show poor mixing in MCMC chains and be sensitive to the choice of prior distributions for variance components. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Use of Two Smoothing Parameters in Penalized Spline Estimator for Bi-variate Predictor Non-parametric Regression Model

Penalized spline criteria involve the function of goodness of fit and penalty, which in the penalty function contains smoothing parameters. It serves to control the smoothness of the curve that works simultaneously with point knots and spline degree. The regression function with two predictors in the non-parametric model will have two different non-parametric regression functions. Therefore, we...

Linear mixed models and penalized least squares

Linear mixed-effects models are an important class of statistical models that are not only used directly in many fields of applications but also used as iterative steps in fitting other types of mixed-effects models, such as generalized linear mixed models. The parameters in these models are typically estimated by maximum likelihood (ML) or restricted maximum likelihood (REML). In general there...

Penalized Log Likelihood Density Estimation, via Smoothing-Spline ANOVA and ranGACV - Comments to Hansen and Kooperberg, ‘Spline Adaptation in Extended Linear Models’

We thank Hansen and Kooperberg (HK) for an interesting paper discussing model selection methods in the context of Extended Linear Models. We comment on their univariate density estimation studies, which maximize the log likelihood in a low dimensional linear space. They consider spline bases for this space and consider greedy and Bayesian methods for choosing the knots. We describe a penalized ...

Fast Adaptive Penalized Splines

This paper proposes a numerically simple routine for locally adaptive smoothing. The locally heterogeneous regression function is modelled as a penalized spline with a smoothly varying smoothing parameter modelled as another penalized spline. This is being formulated as hierarchical mixed model, with spline coefficients following a normal distribution, which by itself has a smooth structure ove...

Penalized Structured Additive Regression for Space-time Data: a Bayesian Perspective

We propose extensions of penalized spline generalized additive models for analyzing space-time regression data and study them from a Bayesian perspective. Non-linear effects of continuous covariates and time trends are modelled through Bayesian versions of penalized splines, while correlated spatial effects follow a Markov random field prior. This allows to treat all functions and effects withi...
